
Doha, Jan. 13 (Petra) – Jordan is contributing 40 poems to the the 7th Katara Prize for Prophet’s Poets, an annual competition organized by the Cultural Village Foundation-Katara.
According to an announcement from Katara, a total of 1,105 poems have been submitted for this year’s award, reflecting a 22% increase over the previous edition, which garnered 861 entries.
The highest number of submissions came from Egypt, Sudan, and Somalia, with a combined total of 347 entries. The Levant and Iraq followed with 255 submissions, while the Maghreb countries contributed 247.
Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries submitted 224 poems, and 32 entries were received from non-Arab nations. GCC countries also led the participation in the Nabati poetry category, with 90 submissions, while 134 poems were entered in the classical Arabic poetry category.
The total prize pool for the competition stands at QAR 3.8 million (USD 1.04 million), divided between the two categories of classical and Nabati poetry. Prizes will be awarded to the top three in each category, with the first-place winner receiving QAR 1 million, the second-place winner QAR 600,000, and the third-place winner QAR 300,000.
Additionally, the award committee will publish a collection of the top 30 poems in praise of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), with 15 selected from each category, in a special anthology.
