Amman, Oct. 22 (Petra) The Ministry of Foreign and Expatriate Affairs welcomed on Wednesday the unanimous advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), emphasizing Israel’s obligations as the occupying power under international humanitarian law and its duty to facilitate aid and relief programs for the population in the occupied Palestinian territories, including assistance provided by the United Nations and its agencies, particularly UNRWA.

Ministry spokesperson Fouad Al-Majali affirmed Jordan’s appreciation for the ruling, which underscored Israel’s obligation to ensure full respect for UN premises, including UNRWA facilities, and the protection of its property from interference. The ruling also emphasized respecting the privileges and immunities of UN staff and experts operating in the occupied territories.

Al-Majali noted that the advisory opinion highlighted the need to protect humanitarian and medical personnel and facilities, prevent forced displacement, respect the rights of Palestinian prisoners to Red Cross visits, and prohibit the use of starvation as a method of warfare against civilians.

The opinion further affirmed that Israel, as the occupying power, must adhere to international humanitarian law and respect Palestinian rights, including the presence and activities of the United Nations and other international organizations. Israel is obliged to cooperate in good faith with the UN, providing assistance in all its operations under the UN Charter, including UNRWA.

Al-Majali reiterated Jordan’s steadfast support for UNRWA, condemning Israeli measures targeting the agency, and affirmed the Kingdom’s political and financial backing to ensure the continuation of its vital services to Palestinian refugees across its five areas of operation, in line with its UN mandate.
