Jordanian student lands second in health symposium in UAE’s Al Ain University

Zarqa, Jan 27 (Petra) – A student from the Hashemite University secured second place at the Third Graduate Student Symposium in Health and Biomedical Sciences, organized by Al Ain University in the United Arab Emirates. She was recognized in the Nutrition and Food Sciences category for her research paper titled: “Assessment of the Food Box Contents in Terms of Food Groups and Nutrients for Kindergarten Children in Jordan.”

Sara Salah, a master’s student in Medical Nutrition Therapy and Food Safety, earned the distinguished position in the symposium, which involved 200 participants and reviewers from 25 Arab and international universities.

The study’s supervisor, Nermine Al-Awad, from the Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics Department at the university, explained that the student conducted the study on 402 five-year-old children in the second stage of kindergarten. The results showed no significant differences between children of both genders in private and public schools regarding the food box content. However, there was variation in the consumption of food groups and some micronutrients based on children’s weight differences.

The study recommended that children’s food boxes should contain a variety of healthy food groups, reduce sweets, sugars, and sugary beverages, and monitor children’s food intake to prevent obesity.

The Dean of the College, Amin Eleimat, emphasized the importance of motivating master’s students to participate in local and international forums, conferences, seminars, and workshops, which play a significant role in keeping up with technological advancements in scientific research.
