Wind Turbines Arrive at Duqm Port, Signalling Start of Implementation for Wind
1, Wind 2 Projects
Duqm,
25 Nov 2025 (ONA) — OQ Alternative Energy, a subsidiary of OQ Group, marked
the arrival of the first batch of wind turbines for the Wind 1 and Wind 2
projects at Duqm Port in the Special Economic Zone at Duqm (SEZAD). These
projects constitute the largest wind farms under construction in the Sultanate
of Oman.
The
shipment includes unprecedented standard components that are the first of their
kind in the Sultanate of Oman. The total height of each turbine reaches 200
meters above ground level, with the longest wind blades reaching 90.2 meters
per blade, in addition to the tallest wind turbine towers to be installed in
the country.
Each
turbine has a production capacity of about 6.5 megawatts (MW), which is enough
to supply approximately 2,400 Omani homes with clean energy annually. These
qualitative specifications enhance the Sultanate of Oman’s technical
capabilities in renewable energy and reflect its commitment to integrating the
latest global technologies into its energy infrastructure.
The
ceremony also included a site visit at Duqm Port, during which attendees
reviewed the complex transport and handling operations of these giant
components. A technical explanation was provided regarding the turbine parts,
operating systems, and installation phases, followed by a field tour of the
project site.
The
arrival of these turbines represents a strong indicator of the Sultanate of
Oman’s accelerated steps toward expanding clean energy production and
diversifying the energy mix, in line with Oman Vision 2040 and the Net-Zero
targets by 2050.
The
Wind 1 and Wind 2 projects will feed renewable energy into the electricity
network of Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), which will contribute to saving
cubic meters of gas annually, enhancing operational efficiency, and reducing
carbon dioxide emissions.
This
achievement highlights the Sultanate of Oman’s capacity to attract the latest
global technologies and implement major renewable energy infrastructure,
thereby enhancing its position as a regional hub for clean energy and
supporting its long-term economic and environmental growth.
Eng.
Ghalib Said Al Maamari, Acting CEO of OQ Alternative Energy, said that the
arrival of the first wind turbines for the Wind 1 and Wind 2 projects
represents a pivotal moment in the Sultanate of Oman’s renewable energy journey
and clear evidence of the firm commitment to building a cleaner and more
sustainable future. He noted that with the arrival of these turbines, the
company is preparing to move to the next phase of implementation, supported by
a common will to deliver world-class renewable energy projects.
He
added that these projects will contribute to enhancing the national energy
system, supporting supply resilience, and opening new horizons for expansion in
the fields of green hydrogen and renewable energy technologies.
For
his part, Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President of Renewables at TotalEnergies,
stated that cooperation with OQ Alternative Energy is a fundamental pillar in
accelerating the pace of energy transition in the Sultanate of Oman. He
explained that the development of Wind 1 and Wind 2 projects, which together
will provide 234 MW of clean energy, will enhance the renewable energy
infrastructure in the Sultanate of Oman and reduce carbon emissions.
He
emphasized that the partnership between national institutions and global
expertise enhances innovation, supports knowledge transfer, and contributes to
achieving sustainable progress. The wind projects constitute a successful
example of international and local partnerships, directly supporting the goals
of Oman Vision 2040 to achieve Net-Zero by 2050.
Eng.
Mohammed Ali Al Aghbari, External Affairs, Government Relations, and
Communications Manager at Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), said that the
company seeks to sustain its oil and gas production operations and provide 50%
of its electricity needs from renewable sources by 2030 through investment in
renewable energy projects like these two pioneering wind power projects, based
on its environmental responsibility and commitment to achieving Net-Zero carbon
neutrality by 2050.
Omar
Mahmoud Al Mahrizi, CEO of Asyad Ports and Free Zones, stated that the
contribution of Asyad Container Terminal – Duqm to the “Wind 1” and
“Wind 2” wind power projects embodies a model of integration between
the logistics and energy sectors in the Sultanate of Oman. This affirms the
depth of national partnership and its role in pushing the Sultanate of Oman
towards transformation in the energy sector, consistent with the objectives of Oman
Vision 2040.
He
pointed out that the handling and transport operations of 36 wind turbines were
managed at Asyad Terminals in Duqm, weighing more than 298 thousand tons, which
proves the team’s readiness and ability to handle complex and massive shipments
with high efficiency and according to the highest international operational
standards. This reflects its commitment to teamwork and joint effort with
strategic partners to achieve national goals.
He
added that this success embodies Asyad Group’s commitment to providing integrated
logistical solutions that support the renewable energy system in the Sultanate
of Oman, transforming the national vision for sustainability into a practical
reality that solidifies the Sultanate of Oman’s position on the map of global
trade and supply chains.
