Amman, Sept 1 (Petra) – More than 250 media outlets from around 70 countries took part on Monday in a campaign denouncing Israel’s killing of large numbers of Palestinian journalists in Gaza.
The campaign, initiated by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the advocacy group Avaaz, included black ribbons across newspaper front pages, editorials, online banners, and broadcast messages urging protection for Palestinian journalists, accountability for Israel’s actions, and unrestricted access for foreign media to Gaza.
According to Agence France-Presse, many of the participating newspapers carried a message on a black background reading, “At the rate at which the Israeli army is killing journalists in Gaza, soon no one will be left to report what is happening.” Among them were L’Humanité in France, P?blico in Portugal, and La Libre in Belgium.
Others joining the campaign included Lebanon’s L’Orient-Le Jour, U.S.-based investigative outlet The Intercept, and Germany’s Die Tageszeitung. The initiative followed Israeli strikes last week that killed 20 people, including five journalists, at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis in southern Gaza.
In a statement, RSF said, “These organizations and editorial boards condemn the crimes committed by the Israeli army against Palestinian journalists, call for their urgent protection and evacuation, and demand that international media be allowed into the Gaza Strip independently.”
RSF noted it has filed four complaints with the International Criminal Court accusing the Israeli army of war crimes against journalists in Gaza over the past 22 months.
The group has documented the killing of more than 210 journalists since the start of the war and Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip.
