Parliamentary Committee Approves Draft General Statistics Law

Amman, January 23 (Petra) – The Parliamentary Economy and Investment Committee, chaired by MP Khaled Abu Hassan, approved the draft General Statistics Law for 2024 on Thursday.

The approval follows extensive discussions and amendments, with the aim of bolstering government performance and decision-making through accurate and reliable data.

The meeting was attended by Minister of State Ahmed Owaidi, Secretary-General of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation Marwan Rifai, and Director of the Department of Statistics Haider Freihat.

The draft law includes robust provisions for protecting citizens’ personal data, with strict penalties imposed on any misuse or unauthorized disclosure of such information, thereby safeguarding individual privacy while ensuring data reliability, Abu Hassan said.

“This law represents a crucial step towards improving government performance and enabling informed political and economic decision-making,” emphasized Abu Hassan. He highlighted that the law aligns with the Royal directives for developing economic and administrative legislation, particularly in achieving the vision of economic modernization.

The committee members underscored the law’s significance in enhancing government transparency and providing a robust foundation for strategic planning. They stressed that accurate data is paramount in addressing the Kingdom’s economic and social challenges.

Owaidi emphasized that the draft law is a strategic imperative for data-driven governance. He highlighted the establishment of an interactive national data center, as stipulated in the law, as a key enabler for a comprehensive database that will inform evidence-based decision-making.

Freihat emphasized that the law will significantly enhance the quality of government data and facilitate information sharing among government institutions. He explained that the national data center will provide a reliable foundation for informed decision-making to effectively address economic and social challenges.

Rifai stressed the critical role of accurate data in successful development endeavors. He noted that the draft law aims to improve data collection methodologies and expand their utilization.
