Damascus, Jan. 7 (Petra) – After a 14-year hiatus, the air corridor between Amman and Damascus was restored Tuesday as a Royal Jordanian (RJ) flight landed at Damascus International Airport.
The Royal Jordanian flight, organized as a trial by the Civil Aviation Regulatory Commission (CARC) and RJ, symbolizes support and solidarity in reactivating Syrian air navigation. The plane carried a Jordanian technical delegation comprising aviation experts.
CARC Chairman Haitham Misto said that the trial flight reflects Jordan’s official interest in resuming the Amman-Damascus air route.
Speaking at Damascus International Airport, Misto explained that the technical delegation will evaluate the airport’s operations over the next two days to determine the feasibility of resuming Jordanian flights to Damascus.
He emphasized that the decision hinges on meeting international aviation requirements to ensure air travel safety. Once the evaluation is complete, necessary permits will be issued for Jordanian airlines to resume flights.
Misto highlighted that international aviation standards apply to all airports globally, covering logistical, technical, and airspace safety requirements to safeguard aviation security.
During a meeting with Damascus International Airport officials, Misto affirmed Jordan’s readiness to assist Syria in rebuilding its civil aviation sector, including providing technical and navigational equipment such as air traffic control systems (radars).
He added that Jordanian expertise is fully prepared to support Syrian efforts, especially in training, to ensure the security and safety of Syrian aviation.
From the Syrian side, Chairman of the Syrian Civil Aviation and Air Transportation Authority, Ashhad Al-Saleeb, stated that Damascus International Airport has begun receiving international flights after a period of suspension.
He praised Jordan-Syria relations and expressed gratitude for the RJ flight’s arrival at Damascus International Airport, signaling the airport’s reactivation.
Al-Saleeb noted that the Jordanian delegation will conduct a comprehensive logistical and technical assessment to facilitate the resumption of Jordanian flights.
He emphasized ongoing coordination with Jordanian aviation authorities to benefit from their expertise in revamping the airport’s operations.
Al-Saleeb also underlined the importance of reopening Syrian airspace to international flights and announced that efforts to schedule flights at Damascus International Airport would commence immediately, aiming for a gradual return to full operational capacity.
