Amman, Oct. 21 (Petra) – Senate President Faisal Fayez chaired part of a general debate at the 151st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Geneva, Switzerland, under the theme “Upholding Humanitarian Norms and Supporting Humanitarian Action in Times of Crisis.”
The session heard statements from a number of parliamentary speakers and heads of consultative and upper houses, who presented their countries’ and parliaments’ positions on various issues related to international parliamentary and humanitarian work. Discussions also addressed ongoing global conflicts and disputes, and the role parliaments can play in ending them through peaceful solutions grounded in international legitimacy, United Nations charters, and international humanitarian law.
On the sidelines of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Conference, Fayez held separate meetings with several heads and representatives of parliamentary, consultative, and upper houses from brotherly and friendly nations participating in the conference. The meetings focused on bilateral relations and means of strengthening cooperation in political, economic, investment, and parliamentary fields, emphasizing the importance of building on these ties to serve common interests.
Fayez met with Moroccan House of Councillors President Mohamed Ould Rachid, Egyptian House of Representatives Speaker Hanafi Gebali, Bahraini House of Representatives Speaker Ahmed bin Salman Al-Musallam, Omani Shura Council Chairman Khalid bin Hilal Al-Maawali, Algerian Council of the Nation Speaker Azzouz Nasri, and a parliamentary delegation representing the British Houses of Commons and Lords.
In addition to bilateral relations, discussions covered the current situation in the region, particularly the Palestinian cause, and stressed the need for Israel to fully comply with all terms of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
During the meetings, participants underscored the importance of all parties adhering to the ceasefire agreement in Gaza at every stage, describing it as a fundamental step toward achieving stability in the Middle East and ending conflicts across the region.
The talks also addressed the need to maintain calm in the West Bank and Jerusalem and to reject any unilateral Israeli actions, warning that such measures could trigger a serious escalation threatening regional and international peace and stability.
The meetings further emphasized the necessity of strengthening humanitarian response efforts in Gaza and ensuring the delivery of adequate aid to mitigate the catastrophic consequences of the Israeli aggression, while preventing Israel from obstructing the entry of humanitarian assistance.
Fayez highlighted the extensive and ongoing efforts of His Majesty King Abdullah II to promote peace and stability in the region and his leadership in mobilizing international efforts to sustain the ceasefire in Gaza and create a political horizon to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and secure the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
As part of discussions on regional peace efforts, participants also reaffirmed support for Syria’s unity and sovereignty over its territory, called for an end to Israeli attacks on Syrian lands, and demanded the withdrawal of Israeli forces from all Syrian territories they have entered.
The meetings were attended by Senators Mohammed Al-Ississ, Hael Obeidat, Mohasen Al-Jaghoub, Asia Yaghi, and Ammar Al-Qudah, along with Jordan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations and international organizations in Switzerland, Ambassador Akram Harahsheh.
