Transport system is one of main drivers of national economy, says minister

Amman, Aug 30 (Petra) – Minister of State for Economic Affairs Muhannad Shehadeh said on Saturday that Jordan’s transport system is one of the main drivers of the national economy and a key catalyst for growth under the Economic Modernization Vision (EMV).

He said the vision, championed by His Majesty King Abdullah II, has given major priority to transport projects because of their direct impact on both the economy and citizens.

Speaking during a transport and logistics sector session held at the Prime Ministry as part of preparations for the second executive program of the vision for 2026-2029, Shehadeh underlined the importance of vital transport schemes that improve the quality and efficiency of services provided to the public.

He noted that the Alternative Roads Project seeks to create modern, safe routes that meet global standards, reduce congestion, save time, distance and cost, and enhance comfort and safety for commuters.

The minister cited major planned projects, including the Sweileh-Naour bridge, the Shidiya–Aqaba and Aqaba–Ghor Safi railway lines, improved inter-governorate transport, and the rehabilitation of Marka Airport.

“These projects have a strategic dimension and are attracting investor interest,” Shhada said, adding that work on them is advancing.

He stressed that the Economic Modernization Vision is a cross-government strategy, and the government remains committed to its implementation, as demonstrated by holding the sectoral workshops to launch the second phase of the executive program.

“We are fully convinced of the importance of the private sector in carrying out the vision,” he said, underlining the complementarity between government and private enterprise.

Shhada said the second phase of the program will include several key initiatives and projects with a direct impact on citizens’ well-being. They will be designed to be measurable, time-bound and feasible.

He added that public capital expenditure stands at 1.7 billion dinars, with the government aiming to fully disburse the allocation.

On project details, Shehadeh said a feasibility study has been completed for the Sweileh-Naour bridge, which has attracted investor attention.

On the railway line linking Aqaba with Shidiya and Ghor Safi, he said around 80% of the agreements have been completed, describing the project as strategically important for Jordan.

Regarding Marka Airport rehabilitation, Shehadeh said work is well advanced with the Airports Company, and the facility is expected to reopen soon.
