KHARTOUM, July 30, 2026 (SUNA) – The President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, met on Thursday, at his office in Khartoum with a delegation from the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), headed by IGAD Executive Secretary Workneh Gebeyehu, in the presence of Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salem. The IGAD Executive Secretary said in a press statement that his visit to Khartoum comes within the framework of consultations with the Sudanese leadership and the exchange of views and ideas on ways to achieve sustainable peace in Sudan. He expressed his deep sympathy for all those who have lost their lives in the war. He said Sudan is one of the founding members of IGAD and one of its most important member states, highlighting its historical position as a bridge linking the Arab and African worlds, as well as its humanitarian role as a country that has, for decades, provided refuge to millions of refugees from neighboring countries. He added that during the visit, the delegation witnessed the scale of destruction that affected the capital, Khartoum, reiterating IGAD’s condemnation of all human rights violations committed in El-Fashir and other areas affected by the war. The head of the IGAD delegation praised the exceptional resilience demonstrated by the Sudanese people, saying that the delegation witnessed in Port Sudan a strong national spirit and a great determination to overcome the consequences of the war and build a better future. He stressed that IGAD’s mission is to support the Sudanese people, not to impose solutions on them, affirming that peace can only be achieved inside Sudan and by Sudanese themselves. He added: “Sudanese thinkers and political leaders are best placed to shape the future of their country and achieve peace, while IGAD’s role is limited to facilitating and providing support to every national effort that contributes to ending the war.” The IGAD delegation head affirmed the organization’s readiness to support all initiatives and efforts led by the President of the Transitional Sovereignty Council, General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the Government of Sudan to achieve peace and stability. He also expressed appreciation for the TSC President’s commitment to the path of peace. He affirmed that IGAD will continue working closely with the Sudanese government to support efforts aimed at achieving lasting and comprehensive peace in the country.BH/BH
