UN Security Council Discusses End of Mission in Iraq

New York, Dec. 2 (Petra) – The UN Security Council held a session on Tuesday to review the situation in Iraq, during which members received a briefing from the outgoing head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), Mohamed El Hassan.

The Council had previously decided that the mission’s mandate would end by the close of this year. Commenting on the decision, El Hassan said the UN’s departure does not signal an end to the strong partnership between Iraq and the United Nations, but rather the beginning of a new chapter grounded in Iraq’s leadership of its own future.

El Hassan expressed deep gratitude to the Government of Iraq for hosting the mission and partnering with UNAMI over the past 22 years. He added that the United Nations will continue to stand by Iraq and build on the hard-won gains of recent years by providing technical expertise, advisory support and programmatic assistance through the UN Country Team across various fields.
