Morocco earthquake death toll surpasses 2,800, injures over 2,500

RABAT, 12th September, 2023 (WAM) — The number of casualties, resulting from the earthquake that struck several Moroccan provinces and prefectures on Friday, rose to 2,862, while injuries have reached 2,562, Maghreb Arabe Press reported, citing the Ministry of the Interior.

By province, the tremor resulted in 1,604 fatalities in Al Haouz, 976 in Taroudant, and one death in Essaouira, according to the ministry. Among the deceased, 2,854 have been buried.

Public authorities continue their efforts to rescue and evacuate the injured. They are also mobilising all necessary resources to manage the consequences of this tragedy.

A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck 74 km southwest of Marrakech, Morocco, at a reported depth of 25.987 km on Friday 8th September.
