Amman, May 12 (Petra) – Minister of Transport Wissam Tahtamouni and European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) experts, Fabrizio Perelli and Norm Erik, discussed on Monday ways to develop the national maritime strategy and enhance the Jordanian maritime sector.

“The Jordanian maritime sector proved efficiency over the past years, becoming a key pillar of the national economy and connecting the Kingdom to global markets,” the minister told the meeting, attended by Jordan Maritime Commission (JMC) Director General Omar Dabbas.

She stressed the deep partnership with the EU, recognizing EMSA technical support for development of the Jordanian maritime transport sector.

She said the experts’ visit is a key opportunity to exchange expertise and unify efforts to implement international best practices, reaffirming Jordan’s commitment to implementing relevant international agreements and upgrading policies to handle dangerous goods.

The discussion tackled feasible policies within the anticipated national strategy and the overall objectives the government aspires to meet, emphasizing the importance of technical cooperation to come up with a comprehensive and sustainable maritime strategy.

For his part, Fabrizio said cooperation with the Ministry of Transport and the JMC is a “constructive model” for enhancing maritime safety in the region. He said the presence of EMSA experts in Jordan is to help the development of an effective maritime strategy in line with international standards and serve the interests of Jordan and the region.

He pointed to SAFEMED V, EuroMed maritime safety project is a key platform for supporting Mediterranean countries in implementing the requirements of the International Maritime Organization.

Also speaking during the meeting, Erik noted the key role of the Transport Ministry and relevant institutions in coordination efforts to develop a comprehensive and feasible strategy, adding that field meetings will be held in Aqaba with stakeholders on implementation plans and technical matters related to the strategy.
