New York, May 13 (Petra) – United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen on Tuesday welcomed recent comments by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the lifting of sanctions imposed on Syria.
During a visit to Saudi Arabia, President Trump announced his intention to lift American sanctions on Syria, a move that has drawn international attention.
Speaking to reporters, Pedersen said the remarks align with his ongoing calls for meaningful action in this regard, noting that Syrians both inside the country and in exile have long been urging broad and urgent sanctions relief.
He stressed the importance of such measures in facilitating access to essential services such as healthcare and education, reviving the Syrian economy, unlocking meaningful regional support, and enabling Syrians to actively participate in the national reconstruction effort.
UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric also welcomed the president’s statement, emphasizing the importance of easing sanctions on Syria to support reconstruction efforts and assist the Syrian people in recovering from more than a decade of conflict.
