Syria welcomes Trump’s remarks on lifting sanctions

Amman, May 13 (Petra) – The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates on Tuesday welcomed recent remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting the possibility of lifting sanctions imposed on Syria, calling the comments an encouraging step toward alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people.

According to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), the ministry said in a statement that “although these sanctions were initially imposed on the former regime and contributed to its downfall, they now directly affect the Syrian people and obstruct efforts toward recovery and reconstruction.”

The ministry added that the Syrian people are looking forward to a full lifting of sanctions as part of a broader effort to support peace and prosperity in Syria and the region and to pave the way for constructive international cooperation that enhances stability and development.

Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani told SANA, “We welcome President Donald Trump’s recent statements regarding the removal of sanctions imposed on Syria in response to atrocities committed by the former regime.”

Al-Shibani said this development marks a turning point for the Syrian people as they move toward a future of stability, self-reliance, and genuine reconstruction following years of devastating war.

“We view this announcement with great optimism,” he added, “and we are ready to build a relationship with the United States based on mutual respect, trust, and shared interests.” He noted that President Trump has the opportunity to achieve a historic peace agreement and a true strategic victory for American interests in Syria.
