Amman, May 17 (Petra) – Chairman of Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC), Khalil Haj Tawfiq, stressed the need to activate Jordanian-Cypriot Business Council to play its role in advancing bilateral economic relations by networking business owners and companies, exchanging visits, organizing forums, and holding specialized exhibitions.

During a meeting with the Cypriot Ambassador to Jordan, Sevag Avedissian, Haj Tawfiq said Jordanian-Cypriot relations are witnessing “continuous” development at the political level, which requires the private sector to play its role and capitalize on the “distinguished” relations and the agreements concluded to expand economic cooperation areas.

According to a JCC statement on Saturday, Haj Tawfiq called for opening a “new” page in bilateral cooperation and charting a future roadmap for economic partnership, especially amid the “modest” volume of trade exchange.

Referring to “true, untapped opportunities” in various sectors, he called for direct meetings with the Cypriot side and establishment of a specialized e-platform to exchange trade information and legislation, which would contribute to building “strong” partnerships that drive trade exchange.

Haj Tawfiq stated Jordan and Cyprus possess economic, tourism, industrial, and investment potential, adding that a database should be built for the two countries’ businesspeople to view available investment opportunities and exportable goods.

Meanwhile, Avedissian noted the current level of cooperation does not reflect the “true available potential,” calling for expediting development of cooperation opportunities and working hard to develop mutual economic and trade relations.

The diplomat underlined the importance of encouraging investment and exchanging trade visits, noting the Cypriot Embassy will provide all necessary facilitations for Jordanian businesspeople wishing to visit Cyprus.

The Embassy’s Commercial Counselor, ??George Mokas, stressed the need to expand trade exchange , mainly in the fields of education, electronics, foodstuffs, vegetables, fruits, pesticides, and medicines, as well as enhancing tourist cooperation and benefiting from Cypriot expertise in this sector.

The attending members of the JCC Board of Directors emphasized the importance of continued cooperation, highlighting importance of the two countries’ “close” geographical location and continuation of low-cost flights, which are a catalyst for increased tourism and trade traffic.
