Baghdad, May 17 (Petra) — Iraqi President Abdul Latif Rashid said an Arab summit that opened in Baghdad on Saturday aims to unify Arab positions amid mounting challenges, stressing political solutions and national dialogue to end regional crises.

“The Baghdad Summit is held under extremely complex circumstances, which place upon us a historic responsibility to take the initiative to enhance opportunities for Arab and regional stability through diplomatic solutions that serve the interests of our peoples and countries,” he said in an address to Arab leaders as he took the summit’s presidency from Bahrain.

He said the for nearly a year and a half, the Palestinians had been exposed to systematic genocide aimed to wipe out their existence.

“While we condemn this aggression and practices, which are in violation of international law, and salute the Palestinian people, we reaffirm our position in rejecting all attempts at their displacement,” he said.

Joint Arab security is indivisible, the Iraqi leader stressed, reiterating rejection of foreign interference in Arab countries that threatens their security and peoples, and urged respect of the choices of people to build their countries and fulfill their aspirations.
