Transport Ministry expands e-tracking system for vehicles with environmental impact

Amman, Aug 20 (Petra) – The Ministry of Transport has begun expanding the use of an electronic tracking system to cover vehicles and machinery with environmental and economic impact, Minister Nidal Katamine said on Wednesday.

He said one of the key projects moving toward full implementation is the tracking of wastewater tankers, which recently received cabinet approval for a nationwide rollout after a successful pilot in the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. The initiative, implemented by the Environment Ministry with funding from the Environmental Protection Fund, aims to reduce pollution caused by the random disposal of wastewater.

Katamine added that the Agriculture Ministry has also launched a project to track vehicles transporting organic fertilizers as part of efforts to combat fly infestations in the Jordan Valley. Tracking devices have been installed on some vehicles to assess the system technically ahead of a broader expansion.

In a related measure, the Water Authority has tendered a project to track private drilling rigs to monitor their movement and curb unlicensed drilling in water-sensitive areas. The project is part of a national plan to protect groundwater from over-extraction and contamination.

Katamine stressed that the Transport Ministry continues to support and coordinate these initiatives in its regulatory capacity, while the responsible agencies oversee implementation and technical follow-up. He said further sectors are under review for inclusion in the system, in line with government objectives to optimize resources, strengthen governance, and curb violations.
