Specialized Workshop in Aqaba Calls for Empowering Union Leadership

Aqaba, Sept. 21 (Petra) – A specialized workshop held in Aqaba, organized by the General Union of Workers in the seaports and clearance in collaboration with the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), recommended empowering trade union leaders.

According to Khalid Al-Fanatsah, President of the General Federation of Jordanian Trade Unions, the workshop reflects the federation’s commitment to supporting union leadership, enabling them, and developing practical solutions to defend workers’ rights while promoting social dialogue based on genuine partnership among all production stakeholders.

Al-Fanatsah noted that in the federation’s upcoming term, 20 percent of board seats will be allocated to youth and another 20 percent to women, aligning with national priorities.

ITF Secretary-General Baker Khandaqji emphasized that collaboration with Jordanian unions serves as a model, considering the development of union leaders’ capacities as a key step toward a strong labor movement capable of driving change locally, regionally, and internationally.

Mahmoud Edbeis, President of the General Union of Workers in the seaports and clearance, stated that the workshop addressed ways to develop negotiation skills, formulate sustainable strategies, and equip unionists with practical tools to tackle growing economic and political challenges.

The event reflects ongoing efforts to support the labor movement, highlight the unions’ pivotal role in improving working conditions, protecting workers’ rights, and strengthening the foundations of social justice.
