Moscow, June 8 (Petra) — Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations
on Monday declared a maximum aviation emergency alert in the
country’s Far East following the eruption of Mount Shiveluch on the
Kamchatka Peninsula and surrounding areas, warning that another
explosive eruption could occur in the coming days.
The ministry stated in a press release: “The ash cloud resulting from
the Shiveluch eruption has spread 50 kilometers from the crater,
while lava flows have moved eastward toward the Bering Sea.
Consequently, a maximum aviation alert and a total no-fly zone have
been declared in the affected region.”
The ministry added that safety warnings have been issued and
authorities are evaluating potential evacuation plans for residents
should the situation demand it.
