Amman, June 14 (Petra) – Theodoros II, Pope and Patriarch of
Alexandria and All Africa for the Greek Orthodox Church, reaffirmed
his steadfast support for Jordan’s historic role under the Hashemite
Custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem,
during a reception Saturday evening.

The Patriarch emphasized the critical function of the Custodianship
in safeguarding the identity of the holy sites and fostering
interfaith dialogue, noting that he firsthand witnessed the impact of
this historical role during his initial visit to Jerusalem 50 years
ago. He described the Hashemite Custodianship as a foundational
pillar for protecting holy places and promoting coexistence,
characterizing Jordan as a blessed land.

His remarks came during a dinner hosted by Samer Ghazi Kawar, the
Honorary Consul of the Republic of San Marino, at the Kawar
residence. The event was attended by Patriarchal Vicar Archbishop
Damaskinos Al-Azrai, the Metropolitan of the Baptism Site Archbishop
Benedictus, along with several religious leaders, senators, MPs,
ambassadors, honorary consuls, and civil society representatives.

Kawar welcomed the Patriarch to Jordan, praising his supportive
stances toward the Kingdom and His Majesty King Abdullah II’s role as
the Hashemite Custodian of the holy sites in Jerusalem. Kawar also
highlighted the prominent role of Archbishop Damaskinos Al-Azrai in
strengthening ties between the Patriarchate of Alexandria and Jordan,
his homeland.

The Patriarch’s visit serves to strengthen institutional ties,
building upon the close relations between Jordan and Egypt. The visit
specifically focuses on boosting religious tourism in the Kingdom and
highlighting its global importance as a destination for Christian
pilgrimage.
