Jordan, Mexico Discuss Trade, Investment Cooperation

Amman, June 17 (Petra) — Jordan Chamber of Commerce (JCC) President
Khalil Haj Tawfiq on Wednesday discussed with Mexican Ambassador
Jacob Prado Gonzalez expanding economic, trade, and investment
cooperation.

According to a JCC statement, Tawfiq said Jordan’s exports to Mexico
reached JD 17 million last year, compared with imports of JD 55
million, pointing to significant opportunities to increase and
diversify Jordanian exports.

He also called for studying the possibility of reaching a free trade
agreement between Jordan and Mexico to boost trade exchange, increase
investment flows, and open new markets for exports in both countries.

During the meeting at JCC headquarters, Tawfiq stressed the need to
activate the 2021 memorandum of understanding signed between the JCC
and the Mexican Business Council for Foreign Trade, Investment, and
Technology to strengthen private-sector engagement and launch
practical cooperation initiatives that serve mutual economic
interests.

He urged stronger communication with Mexican chambers of commerce and
economic institutions, proposing a virtual meeting between JCC and
its Mexican counterpart to identify priority sectors for cooperation,
particularly tourism, information technology, transport equipment,
medical devices, pharmaceuticals, food industries, and chemical
industries.

Tawfiq proposed hosting a Mexican economic and trade delegation in
Jordan to examine available investment opportunities and the
advantages the Kingdom offers investors, and to explore Jordan’s
potential as a gateway to Arab and regional markets.

He also called for studying the establishment of an Arab-Mexican
chamber of commerce as a permanent institutional framework to advance
economic, trade, and investment cooperation between Mexico and Arab
countries, facilitate communication between business communities,
identify promising opportunities, and build partnerships and joint
ventures.

Tawfiq said Jordan offers an attractive investment environment and a
strategic location that qualifies it as a gateway to regional and
Arab markets, stressing the importance of exchanging trade
delegations and organizing joint business meetings to promote
investment opportunities on both sides.

He said promising export opportunities should be leveraged,
particularly in chemical industries, fertilizers, textiles, plastic
products, and engineering industries, alongside stronger cooperation
in technology, food industries, logistics, and investment.

For his part, Gonzalez affirmed Mexico’s keenness to strengthen
economic, trade, and investment cooperation with Jordan and develop
ties between the two countries’ business communities.

He highlighted the importance of launching joint initiatives and
projects in strategic sectors of mutual interest, especially trade,
services, agriculture, information technology, transport, and
tourism.

Gonzalez expressed interest in the proposals presented during the
meeting and said the embassy is ready to support the preparation of a
joint action program to enhance communication with chambers of
commerce and business councils in Mexico, explore new areas of
cooperation, facilitate engagement between economic stakeholders, and
expand bilateral trade.

The Mexican ambassador invited the JCC and Jordanian businesspeople
to visit Mexico to review available economic and investment
opportunities and discuss the potential for building practical and
sustainable private-sector partnerships between the two countries.
