New York, June 21 (Petra) – The UN Security Council is scheduled to
vote on Tuesday on a draft resolution aimed at strengthening
accountability for crimes committed against United Nations
peacekeepers.

The resolution has been opened for co-sponsorship by all UN member
states and has already received the backing of more than 100
countries.

UN peacekeepers operating in increasingly complex and volatile
conflict zones continue to face growing threats from armed groups,
terrorist attacks, indirect fire, improvised explosive devices (IEDs)
and emerging technologies, including drones.

According to the United Nations, nearly 4,500 peacekeepers have lost
their lives in the line of duty since 1948. In 2025 alone, 59
peacekeepers were killed, including the most recent casualty in
Lebanon.

The draft resolution seeks to reinforce international efforts to
ensure accountability for attacks targeting peacekeeping personnel
serving in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
