Arar, March 16, 2023, SPA – The Saudi Press Agency (SPA) has documented extraction and manufacturing process of phosphates at Ma’aden Wa’ad Al Shamal Phosphate Company (MWSPC) in the city of Wa’ad Al-Shamal. Located in the northern border region, the city, holds nearly 7% of the global stock of phosphates. The mine operates 24 hours a day and involves locating the phosphate, drilling, blasting, and extraction using heavy machinery.
According to reports from the Saudi Geological Survey, numerous studies were conducted to identify various reservoirs and resources in the northern border region. These studies revealed deposits rich in various mineral ores and large reserves of minerals in the ground, including phosphates.
Thiyab Al-Enezi, the General Manager of Business and Economic Planning, stated that MWSPC’s production is estimated at 3 million tons of fertilizers, including diammonium phosphate and mono ammonium phosphate, as well as phosphate fertilizers. The company also produces 22,000 tons of transformative industries. Al-Khabra mine alone is sufficient to operate the factory for more than 25 years, and there is another mine with enough reserves to operate for the next 40 years.
Al-Enezi also mentioned Ma’aden’s efforts in the field of social responsibility, including the construction and operation of two schools of excellence equipped with advanced educational technologies in Arar and Turaif. These efforts amount to a financial value of SAR 150 million over six years.
The success of Wa’ad Al-Shamal can be attributed to Allah’s grace and the support of the government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and HRH the Crown Prince. They have given special attention to the development of Wa’ad Al-Shamal as part of a general strategy that aligns with the objectives of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030.
MWSPC’s strategic human resources business partner, Ahmed Asiri, emphasized that the company has achieved high localization rates. Out of the company’s 1,005 employees, 75% are Saudis, and employees from the northern border region constitute 84% of the total Saudi staff. The company has also trained 174 students from the Saudi Mining Polytechnic and employed them in its factories. Additionally, the company provided several customized training courses, including unique development programs, job qualifications, and security and safety training, to refine the skills of 837 of its employees.
