Amman, May 21 (Petra) – Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abu Saud on Wednesday inaugurated the Hallabat Water Conveyance Project, a strategic infrastructure initiative aimed at boosting water supply to Amman and Zarqa.

The project is funded by the United States government with a total investment of $50 million.

According to a Ministry statement, the project seeks to strengthen Jordan’s national water supply and expand capacity to meet “growing” demand, particularly in the heavily populated areas of Amman and Zarqa, by delivering water from Hallabat, a town located around 30 kilometers east of Zarqa.

Talking at the inaugurating ceremony, Abu Saud valued the continued support of the US government to Jordan’s water sector, emphasizing the project’s importance as a “model” of innovation, international cooperation, and strategic planning. He described it as a “vital” step to address Jordan’s acute water challenges and support the national economy.

The project involves the rehabilitation and development of 25 wells in the Hallabat well basin, expected to add 30 million cubic meters of water annually.

These additional supplies will help serve approximately 820,000 people in Amman and Zarqa and support water needs in other regions, aligning with the goals of the National Water Strategic Plan to improve efficiency and reduce losses.

Abu Saud noted further efforts are underway to develop new sources, upgrade operational systems, and rehabilitate existing infrastructure to ensure broader water coverage throughout the Kingdom.

Meanwhile, US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Rohit Nepal reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to supporting Jordan’s water security efforts, highlighting the importance of joint action in reducing water loss and responding to long-term challenges.

Completed in just eight months, the Hallabat project stands as a successful example of emergency response to water scarcity and showcases the impact of international partnerships, technological innovation, and infrastructure development in enhancing water resilience in Jordan.
