Amman, June 24 (Petra) – Minister of Agriculture, Khaled Hneifat, on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with SEEDS Jordan, represented by National Land Coalition (NLC), which includes 18 civil society organizations and international institutions.

The memo seeks to enhance cooperation in the land management and governance fields, in accordance with principles and values ??of the International Land Alliance, which ensures a human-centered approach that contributes to improve lives of local communities.

During the signing ceremony, the two sides called for orchestrating efforts and expertise under the NLC’s platform, which seeks to create “positive” pressure to accelerate achievement of national goals in the sustainable land use, raise operational efficiency, and improve coordination among relevant stakeholders.

According to a ministry statement, the memo aims to implement provisions of a strategy approved by the Jordanian Council of Ministers, which was outlined in partnership by Ministry of Agriculture, Seeds Jordan and International Land Alliance.

The MoU aims to implement goals of the land management strategy and responsible land investment.

The memo also features several measures, mainly launching mechanisms to support community initiatives in sustainable land investment and raising awareness on the sigificance of natural resources in combating climate change, epidemics, and conflicts.

On other goals, the MoU would implement interactive research programs to collect vital data to protect ecosystems and enhance their benefits to the population, while the fourth strategic goal would empower women, youth, and vulnerable groups.

Under the memo, target groups would bette engage in land governance, develop legislation and regulations to support their effective participation, conduct hands-on research to grasp their needs and integrate outcomes in policy development and providing technical cooperation to implement field activities.

This axis provides cooperation in implementing joint programs and initiatives to support rational land management, contribute to build capacity of local institutions, and enhance transparency and inclusiveness in land governance.

The memo represents a “strategic” step to build “effective” partnerships for “sustainable and equitable” land management in Jordan, and enshrining principles of transparency, community engagement and social justice in the decision-making process, both sides pointed out.
