VIENNA, June 9, 2026 (SUNA) — The Permanent Representative of Sudan to the United Nations and International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Magdi Ahmed Mufaddal, addressed the meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors on Tuesday, held during the period of June 8–12, 2026. He called upon the Agency and member states to support Sudan’s efforts to restore oncology diagnostic and treatment services at government centers affected by the war, including the National Cancer Institute in Wad Madani, the Radiation and Isotope Centre in Khartoum (RICK), and Shendi University, as well as contributing to the establishment of three new centers in peripheral regions. The Ambassador praised the progress achieved in the project to restore radiotherapy services at the National Cancer Institute in Wad Madani and the completion of its first phase, noting ongoing efforts to procure diagnostic and radiotherapy equipment and provide a linear accelerator for the center. He also urged member states and regional and international financing institutions to support the “Atoms for Food” initiative launched by the IAEA in cooperation with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). He emphasized Sudan’s anticipation to receive a technical delegation from the Agency to assess the status of the Atomic Energy Commission and relevant national institutions, identify their urgent needs, and formulate a plan for their rehabilitation and capacity-building in the fields of agriculture, animal resources, fisheries, water resources, and food safety.BH/BH
