Energy Minister Announces Shift Toward Indigenizing Clean Energy and Strengthening International Partnerships at India Energy Week 2026

New Deli, Jan. 29,2026 (SUNA) – On the second day of India Energy Week 2026, Minister of Energy Engineer Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed participated in a high-level dialogue session titled “Global South Solidarity in Clean Energy: Strengthening South–South Cooperation for a Shared Future.” The session was attended by Ralph Regenvanu, Minister of Climate Change Adaptation, Meteorology and Geo-Hazards, Energy, Environment and Disaster Management of Vanuatu, and Indra Mani Pandey, Secretary-General of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC).The session saw notable participation from a number of ministers, diplomats, and executives of leading energy companies in India. Discussions focused on the growing role of renewable energy sources in enhancing energy security and building climate resilience in developing countries.The minister affirmed that Sudan has set a strategic objective to indigenize the clean energy sector, underscoring the importance of identifying domestic potential in solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, and biomass energy, in line with regional characteristics. He said Sudan will increasingly shift toward hydropower instead of fossil fuels, stressing the need to expand reliance on renewable and clean energy sources.He explained that solar energy is the most suitable option for Sudan’s climatic and economic conditions, adding: “Accordingly, we are working to promote and expand the use of solar energy. The slogan ‘One Sun, One Energy’ best applies to Sudan. We are an agricultural country, and renewable energy represents the primary source for supporting the agricultural sector.”In support of this transition, the minister noted that the Central Bank of Sudan has committed to allocating 12.5 percent of microfinance funding to the clean energy sector in agriculture and industry, reinforcing efforts toward a green and sustainable economy.On the sidelines of the conference, the minister met with the Chief Executive Officer of Vitol Asia, Kiran Qalqar, to discuss ways to strengthen partnership between the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum and the company, which operates in the trading and distribution of crude oil, petroleum products, and liquefied natural gas (LNG), as well as shipping, storage, and energy-related infrastructure services.The minister also toured the exhibition accompanying the conference, where he received detailed briefings on the activities and areas of specialization of participating energy companies.BH/BHBottom of Form
