Amman, May 20 (Petra) – The European Union has reached a preliminary agreement to ease economic sanctions on Syria in a bid to support the country’s recovery after years of war and conflict, according to Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The decision does not signify a full lifting of all restrictions. Brussels will maintain its ban on arms sales and equipment that could be used to suppress civilians. Additionally, it is preparing to impose targeted sanctions on individuals inciting ethnic tensions.
The EU linked the move to Damascus’s commitment to upholding minority rights and advancing toward democracy, warning that sanctions could be reimposed if these conditions are violated.
Diplomats said the agreement was reached among ambassadors of the EU member states and is expected to be formally announced by foreign ministers later today.
The EU’s decision follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement last week that Washington would lift its own sanctions on Syria.
