Amman, May 21 (Petra) – Several European countries have sharply escalated their criticism of Israel following an incident in which Israeli occupation forces fired warning shots at a visiting European diplomatic delegation in the city of Jenin, located in the occupied West Bank. The confrontation has led multiple European capitals to summon Israeli ambassadors to demand urgent explanations.
In Rome, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced the summoning of the Israeli ambassador over what he described as “unacceptable threats,” referring to the warning shots fired by Israeli soldiers toward Italian diplomats.
Spain’s Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, stated that Madrid had summoned the Israeli envoy to protest the incident, which occurred during an official diplomatic mission to Jenin.
Belgian Foreign Minister Hadja Lahbib called on Israel via X to provide “convincing” explanations, affirming that the warning shots targeted about 20 diplomats including a Belgian national who were part of a clearly identifiable convoy that had been coordinated with the Israeli military.
France also announced it had summoned the Israeli ambassador, calling the event “unacceptable,” and confirmed that French nationals were among those targeted.
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, issued a strong condemnation of the incident and urged Israel to uphold its international obligations.
Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris expressed his “shock” over the incident, highlighting that Irish diplomats were also part of the delegation. Meanwhile, Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister Andreas Kravik stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of diplomatic personnel and reaffirmed his country’s expectation that Israel respect their international immunity.
The incident has sparked growing concerns over the safety of diplomatic missions operating in conflict zones and raised serious questions about Israel’s adherence to international law and its responsibility to protect foreign diplomats.
