Brazzaville, May 29, 2026 (SUNA) – Minister of Finance, Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim met Friday with President of the African Development Bank (AfDB) Group Dr. Sidi Ould Tah on the sidelines of the Bank’s annual meetings currently underway in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. The meeting was attended by Sudan’s Ambassador to Congo Kinshasa, Othman Hussein, AfDB Regional Director General for East Africa Alex Mubiru, and a number of experts and technical officials. At the outset of the meeting, the finance minister congratulated Dr. Ould Tah on assuming leadership of the AfDB Group and praised achievements made during his first year in office. The two sides reviewed the course of cooperation between Sudan and the African Development Bank in light of the longstanding relations between the two parties, with Sudan being one of the founding members of the Bank. Dr. Gebreil outlined the economic and social repercussions of the war and the extent of damage to infrastructure and key productive and service sectors, particularly electricity, education, healthcare, and drinking water systems. He stressed the importance of the Bank’s contribution to reconstruction, economic recovery, and continued support for the agricultural sector through the provision of production inputs to strengthen the summer agricultural season and enhance food security. For his part, Dr. Ould Tah reaffirmed the African Development Bank Group’s commitment to continuing support for Sudan in productive and service sectors. He said the Bank is exploring ways to strengthen the agricultural sector through resources allocated to Sudan and accelerate implementation of existing projects, particularly the wheat production project carried out in cooperation with the World Food Programme (WFP). He added that the Bank has allocated financing for several new projects, including the Port Sudan water project and a solar-powered irrigation pumps project to support agriculture. The meetings also witnessed the signing of an agreement for the Agricultural and Food Systems Resilience Enhancement Project worth US$83 million.The finance minister invited the AfDB President to visit Sudan at the earliest opportunity, and Dr. Ould Tah welcomed the invitation and affirmed his keenness to make the visit in support of bilateral cooperation.BH/BH
