Khartoum, March 25, 2026 (SUNA) – Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Professor Ahmed Modawi Musa affirmed the ministry’s serious efforts to improve the conditions of faculty members and supporting staff, in a manner commensurate with the vital roles they play in sustaining the teaching process and maintaining academic quality. He underscored the continuation of efforts to enhance salaries and structures befitting university professors. The remarks came as he chaired, on Wednesday, a meeting dedicated to the distribution of financial support provided by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning to higher education institutions, attended by vice-chancellors of public universities. The meeting was held at the ministry’s conference hall at the Mineral Tower in Khartoum, with additional participation via Zoom. The minister highlighted the state leadership’s appreciation of university professors and their roles, noting continued commendation of higher education institutions as a cornerstone for achieving comprehensive development and building national capacities through their central role in preparing qualified cadres, supporting scientific research, and serving society. He further indicated that the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning responded promptly following the approval of the 2026 budget by increasing support to universities, allocating 21 billion Sudanese pounds (SDG) to cover the cost of improving service conditions for employees in public institutions—including faculty members, teaching assistants, and other staff—as well as operational, administrative, and training expenses. He explained that the funds designated for staff compensation will be transferred to university accounts and distributed across three main categories: improving service conditions for employees in public higher education institutions, training faculty members, and supporting the continuity of the educational process.Meanwhile, Director-General of Financing and member of the government support distribution committee, Manal Ahmed Al-Sayid, stated that no less than SDG 11.9 billion has been allocated to support professors’ salaries. She noted that the salary of a full professor will not be less than SDG 1 million, an associate professor no less than SDG 900,000, and an assistant professor no less than SDG 850,000, alongside additional scales to be detailed in an official circular to all public higher education institutions. She added that salaries for non-academic staff have also been defined, with no less than SDG 7 billion allocated for this category. The meeting commended the efforts of the government support distribution committee, formed by decision of the Head of the National Council for Higher Education and Scientific Research and chaired by Undersecretary Ali Al-Sheikh Al-Sammani, with membership drawn from university vice-chancellors and deputies. The committee established the criteria and standards for distributing government support across public higher education institutions in a manner that ensures fairness and reinforces the stability of the educational process.BH/BH
