Port Sudan, April 8, 2026 (SUNA) – Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Mohi-Eddin Salim, met with the Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), Carl Johan Orehus, and his accompanying delegation, in the presence of Minister of Finance, Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim. The meeting discussed cooperation between Sudan and the WFP, with the minister welcoming the delegation and expressing Sudan’s interest in strengthening collaboration in both humanitarian and development fields. He also welcomed the United Nations’ gradual return to operations in Khartoum following improved stability, expressing hope that other organizations would follow suit. He affirmed Sudan’s readiness to address any impediments to the program’s work, while acknowledging funding challenges facing humanitarian operations. He also welcomed the newly appointed WFP Country Director in Sudan, Abdullah Al-Wardat, affirming the government’s commitment to achieving shared objectives. Minister of Finance, Dr. Gebreil Ibrahim reiterated Sudan’s partnership with the WFP, stressing the importance of supporting development initiatives and farmers, and highlighting Sudan’s significant agricultural potential. For his part, Mr. Orehus expressed satisfaction with his second visit to Sudan since November, noting plans to relocate the program’s operations to Khartoum in the near future. He also praised cooperation with the Sudanese government and indicated that the program is currently assessing urgent needs to present to international donors.BH/BH
