Paris, July 27 (QNA) Wildfires in France and Spain have forced more than 325,000 people to evacuate their homes, particularly near Bordeaux in southwestern France, as well as in several regions of Spain.
French authorities said that firefighters are continuing their efforts to contain the fires, which have destroyed 240 homes, especially near Bordeaux. The flames have advanced to within 15 kilometers of the city.
Officials said that the Bordeaux region is facing a massive fire known as the “firestorm”, noting that this fire is among the largest recorded in France since World War II.
In Spain, authorities reported the evacuation of approximately 60,000 people in the Madrid region, which is facing what officials describe as the worst wildfires in the country’s modern history.
The total number of people evacuated from their homes or tourist accommodations across Spain has reached 75,000, while the fires have scorched approximately 77,000 hectares.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that firefighters are doing everything possible to rescue residents, noting that the country is facing “difficult hours” ahead. He added that there have been positive developments in efforts to contain the wildfires surrounding Madrid
The heatwave and drought affecting several parts of France in recent weeks have contributed to the rapid spread of the wildfires. (QNA)
