French PM: Recognition of Palestinian State “Will Not Stop”

Amman, May 20 (Petra) – French Prime Minister François Bayrou reaffirmed on Tuesday that the momentum toward recognizing a Palestinian state a move under consideration by France, the United Kingdom, and Canada “will not stop.”

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Bayrou told the National Assembly during a government Q&A session that, “For the first time, three major countries the UK, France, and Canada have decided to jointly oppose what is happening in Gaza and to jointly recognize the State of Palestine.” He added, “This initiative, once launched, will not be halted.”

“We cannot leave the children of Gaza an inheritance of violence and hatred. All of this must end and for that reason, we are determined to recognize the State of Palestine,” he stressed.

Bayrou described the situation in Gaza as “unbearable,” adding that “blind violence and the Israeli government’s refusal to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza have turned the area into a place where people are dying a cemetery, to put it plainly. This is a blatant violation of all international legal norms.”

He reiterated France’s call for Israel to allow the entry of humanitarian aid “in large quantities” and “without obstacles.”
