GAM: Crackdown on street vending to ensure smooth traffic

Amman, Aug 22 (Petra) – The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) said on
Saturday its Removal and Street Vending Control Department teams, in
coordination with security bodies, are carrying out regular campaigns
across the capital to clear illegal obstacles and commercial
encroachments from sidewalks, streets, and public transport stops.

GAM, in a statement, responded to social media posts about a shop
owner in Sweileh district whose goods were repeatedly confiscated and
transferred to a private residential location.

It said the department acted after receiving numerous complaints by
residents and road users about sidewalk and street intrusions,
including illegal fruit and vegetable stalls that obstructed traffic.

The shop owner in question has been cited for violations multiple
times, and asked to rectify the situation, but to no avail, said the
municipality.

To avoid discarding fruits and vegetables fit for consumption, GAM
transfers confiscated goods to charities for distribution, it said.
