Health Minister Discusses Eye Care Camp Project with Al-Basar and Hamad Medical Foundations

Khartoum, June 20, 2026 (SUNA) — The Federal Ministry of Health held a joint meeting on Saturday with Al-Basar International Foundation, attended by Dr. Omar Al-Qahtani, Head of Ophthalmology at Hamad Medical Corporation, Dr. Al-Ass Ahmed Kamil, Regional Director of Al-Basar Charity Foundation in Sudan, alongside Undersecretary of Health Dr. Ali Babiker Sayid Ahmed and senior health officials. The meeting reviewed Al-Basar’s efforts during the war, including the reopening of hospitals in several states and the implementation of free eye treatment camps, as well as ongoing arrangements to restore services in Khartoum State, particularly in Riyadh district, where facilities are expected to reopen next month. Health Minister Dr. Haitham Mohamed Ibrahim thanked the Government and people of Qatar and commended the significant role of Hamad Medical Corporation. He welcomed a joint initiative by Al-Basar Charity Foundation and Hamad Medical Corporation to organize an eye care camp aimed at performing 2,500 cataract surgeries. The minister also praised the continued support of Qatari institutions and Al-Basar’s resumption of activities across Sudan’s states, highlighting its initiative to conduct 100,000 eye surgeries between 2026 and 2030. The Undersecretary of Health commended the efforts and called for the establishment of treatment camps in South Kordofan State. Dr. Omar Al-Qahtani reaffirmed Hamad Medical Corporation’s commitment to continuing eye care services for Sudanese patients, while the Regional Director of Al-Basar Charity Foundation stressed the importance of partnership with the Ministry of Health and efforts to expand in-country eye care services in Sudan.BH/BH
