Budapest, July 18 (QNA) – Hungarian President Tamas Sulyok has signed a constitutional amendment ending his presidency after it was approved by the ruling Tisza party.
In a statement, Sulyok said he had no choice but to approve the legislation out of respect for the law, while warning that the amendment undermines the rule of law. The former Constitutional Court judge described the measure as a turning point for Hungary’s constitutional democracy.
The amendment forms part of Prime Minister Peter Magyar’s drive to dismantle power structures established under his predecessor, Viktor Orban, after defeating the veteran leader in April’s election.
Parliament is expected to elect a new president to serve until a new constitution takes effect or for a maximum of five years.
The governing center-right Tisza party holds a two-thirds parliamentary majority, allowing it to amend legislation. (QNA)
