Amman, May 18 (Petra) – The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Sunday launched a training workshop titled “Building Resources in the Field of Democracy, Governance, and Elections,” supported by the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, in partnership with UN Women and the Arab League.

Chairperson of the Board of Commissioners Musa Maaytah inaugurated the workshop, stressing the IEC’s commitment to engaging with partners and the importance of training in strengthening the principles of democracy, governance, and electoral processes. He noted that such workshops enhance the capabilities of IEC staff, equipping them with essential skills and qualifying them as certified election facilitators.

According to an IEC statement, Maaytah highlighted the pivotal role of women in the political reform process, pointing to legislative frameworks that have empowered women to enter political life in alignment with the royal vision. He added that the IEC has established a Women’s Empowerment Unit to support women in political engagement and public service.

Ahmed Amin, representative of the Arab League, underscored the value of collaboration between the League and the IEC, affirming the League’s continued support for promoting integrity and transparency in electoral processes. He noted that the last parliamentary elections, managed by the IEC, demonstrated regional best practices in election administration.

UN Women representative Nicolas Burniat commended the IEC’s progress in managing electoral processes, citing its accumulated institutional experience and collaborative approach as key contributors to the success of recent elections. He emphasized that the training would help develop qualified personnel and further bolster women’s political participation, which has notably increased in recent parliamentary cycles.

The IEC noted that the two-week workshop includes the participation of 20 individuals from the Commission, civil society organizations, and electoral process partners.
