Cairo, June 21 (Petra) – The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on Saturday called for joint parliamentary action to face successive challenges, stressing that closer cooperation and solidarity among Arab countries safeguards the interests of the Arab world and its people.
In a statement to mark the 51st anniversary of the IPU, Secretary-General Ahmed Baaboud said the union continues to coordinate and cooperate between Arab parliaments to counter challenges to Arab national security and defend the interests and stability of Arab countries and protect their societies.
“The occasion this year comes in the midst of regional and international changes and complex political events taking place in the region and the world, which doubled the Union’s responsibilities and strengthens its resolve to continue fulfilling its mission to serve pan-Arab causes, foremost of which is the Palestinian issue,” he said.
Baaboud underlined parliamentary diplomacy as a backup of official diplomacy in promoting understanding and building common interests between countries to serve stability and development and meet the aspirations of Arab peoples for a dignified life governed by justice and fairness.
