Iraq pledges full support to UNRWA

Baghdad, May 18 (Petra) – Iraq on Sunday expressed its readiness to provide comprehensive support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

According to a statement from the media office of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, the premier met in Baghdad with UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini to discuss the agency’s ongoing operations and the challenges it faces, including direct targeting by Israeli forces.

Al-Sudani affirmed Iraq’s full commitment to supporting UNRWA, noting that the pledge had been reflected in initiatives Iraq presented during the Arab and Development Summits held in Baghdad a day earlier, most notably the proposal to establish a fund for the reconstruction of Gaza.

Both sides stressed the need to end the ongoing aggression against the Gaza Strip, expedite the delivery of humanitarian aid to civilians, and open border crossings to facilitate relief access.
