Japan’s Nikkei Hits Two-Month Low After Chip Rout

Tokyo, July 29 (QNA) – Japan’s Nikkei share average plunged to a fresh two-month low on Wednesday, amid a decline in the performance of chip-linked shares.

The tech-heavy Nikkei was ​last ‌down 1.49% to 61,434.19, ​after falling as much as 3.07% and extending the previous session’s more-than 4% fall. The index is now down about 15% from its record closing high last month.

In contrast, the broader Topix rose 0.26% to 3,974.03.

Semiconductor equipment maker Screen Holdings plunged more than 17.25%, its biggest percentage drop since January 2020. Memory ‌chipmaker Kioxia slumped as much ‌as 13.85%.

On the other hand, Keyence jumped by about 15.42%, video game company Konami gained 12.74%, and construction machinery maker Komatsu climbed by 7.63%. (QNA)
