Amman, Aug. 5 (Petra) – Jordan hosted a ministerial meeting on
Wednesday to discuss developments in occupied Jerusalem and its
Islamic and Christian holy sites, bringing together Arab foreign
ministers, the Secretary-General of the Arab League and
representatives from Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey and Malaysia.

The meeting, convened at Jordan’s invitation, aimed to coordinate a
unified response to what participants described as escalating Israeli
measures targeting Jerusalem’s identity and its holy sites.

Opening the meeting, Minister of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs
Ayman Safadi warned that Jerusalem and its holy sites face
unprecedented threats, accusing Israel of expanding settlements,
confiscating land, restricting Palestinians and undermining the
city’s historical and legal status.

Safadi said Israeli policies targeting Al Aqsa Mosque threaten its
historical and legal status quo and warned that continued violations
risk fueling wider regional and religious tensions.

He said that the conflict is rooted in Israel’s occupation of
Palestinian territory, not religion and called on the international
community to act urgently to halt Israeli measures in Jerusalem,
preserve the prospects for a two-state solution and support regional
stability.

He said Jordan’s position is that the sovereignty over Jerusalem
belongs to the Palestinian people, while the Hashemite Custodianship
safeguards the city’s Islamic and Christian holy sites.

The meeting was attended by senior officials from Qatar, Saudi
Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Algeria, Tunisia, Somalia, Palestine, Morocco,
Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia, Malaysia and the League of Arab States.

Ahead of the session, Safadi held bilateral meetings with several
participating foreign ministers to discuss coordination on the
situation in occupied Jerusalem. He met with his Iraqi and Egyptian
counterparts within the framework of the Jordan-Iraq-Egypt trilateral
cooperation mechanism.
