Jordan warns against Israel’s advancement of E1 settlement plan

Amman, July 16 (Petra) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates warned on Wednesday against Israel’s decision to advance a settlement plan in so-called E1 area east of occupied Jerusalem, which involves construction of more than 3,000 new housing units.

The settlement project is a flagrant violation of international law that clearly undermines the two-state solution and the Palestinians’ right to set up an independent, sovereign state on June 4, 1967, lines, with occupied Jerusalem as its capital, it said.

The Ministry’s official spokesperson, Sufian Qudah reiterated Jordan’s categorical rejection and strong condemnation of any Israeli attempt to impose control over the West Bank and separate its north from its south.

“This constitutes a flagrant violation of international law and UN Security Council resolutions, particularly resolution 2334, which decried all Israeli measures aimed to alter the demographic composition, character, and status of the Palestinian territory that has been occupied since 1976, including East Jerusalem, in addition to the Advisory Opinion of the International Court of Justice, which affirmed the illegality of the Israeli occupation and the invalidity of settlement construction and annexation measures in the West Bank,” he said.

Qudah also cited media reports on the transfer of the authority to administer and supervise the Ibrahimi Mosque to Israeli settler groups as a continuation of unilateral policies that are in violation of international law and relevant UN resolutions and an attempt to extend Israeli control over the entire Ibrahimi Mosque and change its Islamic and Arab identity.

He reiterated that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory, and that all Israeli measures in the West Bank are illegitimate and illegal.

The spokesman called on the international community to assume its legal and moral responsibility to compel Israel and its far-right government to immediately halt its aggression against the Gaza Strip, its dangerous escalation and its illegal expansionist scheme in the occupied West Bank.

He also called for providing protection to the Palestinian people, realizing their legitimate right to establish an independent state on their national soil, halt the crimes perpetrated against them and hold those responsible to account.
