Amman, July 22 (QNA) – Jordan has welcomed a decision by UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee to keep the Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
The decision was adopted unanimously during the committee’s 48th session, held in the Republic of Korea, and maintains the site’s endangered status over concerns about measures that UNESCO says threaten the cultural heritage of Jerusalem’s Old City.
Jordan’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ambassador Fouad Al Majali, said the decision reaffirmed UNESCO’s position that Israeli actions affecting Islamic and Christian holy sites, freedom of worship and access to religious sites, as well as interference in the administration of the Jerusalem Waqf, are unlawful.
He said the decision also stressed the need to preserve the historic and legal status quo in Jerusalem and safeguard the city’s cultural heritage. (QNA)
