Amman, Jan 18 (Petra) — The Jordan Standards and Metrology Organization (JSMO) said Saturday it handled 199,000 customs declarations in 2024 at the Kingdom’s various crossings and ports, in its inspections to verify imported goods meet specifications before accessing the local markets.

The JSMO re-exported or destroyed products that did not meet Jordanian technical standards and specifications, which were listed on 574 customs declarations, including clothing, shoes, bags, toys and children’s supplies, household electrical appliances, heaters, cookers, lamps, lighting units and rope lights, detergents, cosmetics, sanitaryware, tile, ceramics, marble, building stone and reinforcing steel, said JSMO Director General Abeer Al-Zuhair.

She said the JSMO is keen to verify a product’s trademark against imitation, adding that the organization validated 10,906 assessment documents last year, and 2,332 were found in violation.

She stressed her institution endeavors to safeguard the national economy, protect consumers’ health and safety, and promote investment, based on the economic modernization vision’s goals, high-value industries’ growth drivers, investment, sustainable environment, and improving the quality of life.

Al-Zuhair commended JSMO staff at border posts for their efforts to block counterfeit products, stressing that the institution works with all bodies to ensure a smooth flow of goods through customs ports. She said 126 companies had joined the Committed Trader Program, which grants members facilities to simplify the clearance and control procedures of imported goods.
