Khartoum Wali Tells Turkish Media: Lives, Antiquities, and Archaeological Sites Lost in War Are Irreplaceable

Khartoum, Jan. 18, 2026 (SUNA) – The Wali (Governor) of Khartoum State, Ahmed Osman Hamza, briefed a Turkish media delegation on the conditions in the state during the war, as well as the ongoing recovery and reconstruction efforts. The briefing was attended by the Director-General and Acting Minister of Culture, Information, and Tourism, Al-Tayib Saad Al-Din, and the Director of the Martyr Othman Makawi Center for War Media, Colonel Dr. Ahmed Yousif.The delegation included representatives from official Turkish media outlets, including TRT, CNN Turk, and the Turkish Anadolu Agency. The Wali outlined the extensive destruction inflicted on infrastructure and service facilities, emphasizing the severe challenges the state faced in delivering services under continuous militia shelling targeting civilians.The Wali stated, “While the scale of material losses is significant, the irreplaceable losses are the lives of martyrs and innocent citizens killed by the militia in their homes, markets, and streets, as well as the destruction and pillaging of archaeological sites and the theft of antiquities.”He added, “Despite these challenges, there is a strong will driving the reconstruction and restoration of services, led by the state government and the Supreme Committee for Preparing the General Environment for the Return of Citizens to Khartoum State, supported by the federal government’s decision to return to the capital.
