Minister of Energy: Oil and Gas Sector Is a Key Pillar of the National Economy

Khartoum, April 7, 2026 (SUNA) – Minister of Energy Engineer Al-Mu’tasim Ibrahim Ahmed affirmed the importance of the oil and gas sector, noting that it is one of the key pillars of the national economy and a priority for the Hope Government, which necessitates restoring the sector’s position within the national economy. This came as he chaired a meeting of senior directorate directors at the Sudanese Petroleum Corporation, attended by Engineer Mohamed Salih Othman, Head of the Steering Committee of the Undersecretary’s Office. The Minister reviewed the Ministry’s strategic issues, its development vision, and the handling of challenges in a manner that achieves the state’s national objectives, particularly as the oil and gas sector is among the leading and vital economic sectors that drive economic, productive, and service activities. This is achieved through the extraction of the country’s oil resources, the provision of petroleum derivatives to meet domestic needs, and the contribution of financial resources to the state treasury. The Minister stated that despite the sector sustaining significant damage to infrastructure and core components of the oil industry system and supply chains—including oil fields, storage depots, and the Khartoum Refinery—the Ministry has continued to exert substantial efforts to secure the country’s needs of petroleum products.  He explained that the next phase requires rebuilding what was destroyed by the war in the oil sector so as to strengthen its role in achieving sustainable development goals, noting the Ministry’s efforts to encourage initiatives and innovations that serve the energy sector by leveraging qualified personnel and integration among various units, thereby ensuring accelerated work and high-efficiency achievements.BH/BH
