KHARTOUM, June 8, 2026 (SUNA) — The General Secretariat for Food Security at the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, in cooperation with the Directorate of Seeds and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), organized a virtual training workshop on Seed Security Assessment (SSA) via Google Meet. The workshop brought together directors of production and economic resources from the states, Director General of Seeds Dr. Mona Osman, and a number of agricultural experts and specialists. Secretary-General for Food Security Engineer Amira El-Rawi said the assessment aims to provide accurate, data-based indicators on seed security conditions in targeted states to help determine farmers’ needs and improve planning for future agricultural interventions. She stressed the importance of the participants’ role in supervising field data collection to ensure accurate outcomes. FAO representative and Food Security Unit Coordinator Al-Sadiq Ibrahim El-Amin said seed security assessments are a critical tool for understanding the challenges facing farmers amid current economic and climate pressures. He noted that strengthening local technical capacities contributes directly to supporting smallholder farmers and reinforcing national food security. The four-day workshop, launched by National Expert for Seed Security Surveys Professor Awadallah Abdullah Abdel-Moula, aims to enhance the capacities of technical personnel in conducting seed security assessments and collecting and analyzing data related to seed availability, quality, and accessibility to support strategic agricultural planning.BH/BH
