ANKARA, 25th October, 2023 (WAM) — A delegation from the Emirates News Agency (WAM), led by its Director-General Mohammed Jalal Al Rayssi, participated in the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) ‘s 51st conference, which was held in the Turkish capital Ankara under the theme ‘preventing fake news’.
Addressing a session entitled “Cooperation Among News Agencies on Fighting Disinformation”, Al Rayssi highlighted that the role of news agencies as a key source of reliable information has become more significant at present in light of the successive waves of misinformation and lies that often circulated through social media platforms.
During the session, he highlighted the vital role of official news agencies and respected media entities in debunking rumours, preventing fake news, disseminating the truth, and verifying news on social media networks.
Al Rayssi underscored the importance of transparency in transmitting news and the need to confront fake news and information. Vigilance with regard to fake news is critical given the highly delicate circumstances the region is experiencing and the flux of events, developments and news.
On the sidelines of the meeting, WAM signed three memoranda of understanding with Türkiye’s Anadolu News Agency, Mongolian News Agency and Iran’s Mehr News Agency as part of WAM’s international multilingual outreach strategy.
Al Rayssi said these cooperation agreements underscore WAM’s persistent efforts to expand its media partnerships with major international media players in alignment with the UAE’s prominent international standing as an incubator for reshaping the future.
